Since 1987, Mental Health America of Eastern Missouri has formally recognized police officers who have shown compassion, understanding, and gone “above and beyond” when assisting a person in psychiatric crisis. In 1989, this act of recognition was officially named the John J. McAtee Award. Each May, we honor recipients at the McAtee Police Recognition Luncheon. Over the years, more than 900 officers have been recognized.

The recognition luncheon is an inspiring recognition of the good work officers are doing every day in our communities to help improve the lives of people who are in a mental health crisis.

Although the date for the 2020 McAtee event has not yet been finalized, we hope you’ll make plans to join us in celebrating these officers by attending the event, providing sponsor-level financial support, or nominating an officer.
